A painting of one of those little-girl-foldy-divination-things made by my great grandmother when she was a girl around the turn of the century. An item in which I take great delight. Yellowed paper with dip pen writing.
Love this. Am currently thinking about how these small folded pieces of paper were a ton of fun to play with but also caused lots of classroom drama and hurt hearts. We called them "fortune tellers" and at times they became social weapons of a sort, not unlike slam books. Whether intended or not, something about this white boat in a vast black sea captures that dual nature for me, the combination innocence/deviousness that was so present in girlhood relationships.

it feels like the ghosts of fingers are here
ooh, thanks for reminding me…
Julia, I agree so much with what you said about these paper fortune-tellers. I still regard them with lust and fear.
